Roamer (Now Bagpuss) (August 2024)
This lovely teddy bear cat is Bagpuss - known as Roamer whilst in our care.
He is approximately 7 years old, and he has spent 6 of those years homeless, lonely and uncared for.
He was in fact known to be homeless but nobody would allow a trap on their property so we could bring him into our care. They instead insisted that he was perfectly fine, and was enjoying life as he was – although the truth of it was very different.
When we were eventually able to bring him into our care, we discovered he was covered in deep scratches and had sore scars on his face, neck, back and shoulders. His ears were so badly damaged that they no longer stand up, and instead, they flop forward.
This poor boy was hungry, dirty, and fearful, but we could tell that underneath he was a gentle lad.
We took him to our vets, tended his wounds and settled him into his little den. The process of regular tasty food and lots of patient love and kindness had begun, to help him to get over his fears and to trust again. Once he was neutered, this of course became easier for him as well as for us.
It became clear very early on that he had been somebody’s pet in his younger days. We discovered that he is a rather talkative boy who loves a chat, and plenty of attention.
He has been through a terrible time, and this lovely cuddly cat has 6 long years of love to catch up on.
After four months of rest and recovery, he was ready to start afresh in real home of his own, and a life ahead filled with love and care. It wasn't long before he was offered the home he was waiting for. You can see him with his lovely new family in his video below - they have named him Bagpuss.
His story is sadly not unique. A homeless life, lived without care is a harsh and short one for cats like him. Bagpuss was unneutered, and he survived in the only way he could, but he would have had a much happier and safer life in a home, with regular meals, and with warmth and comfort.
It is upsetting that some people still think it is fine for cats to live like this, and that somehow they are having a great time. If you see a cat that you think is homeless, please be kind and offer them a soft a bed, some food and water and let your local cat rescue know. It could be their last chance.
